| From the official google blog: You need modern browsers to use modern applications. I believe we have mentioned how much we hate IE6 on the show before but I think its great to see such a large prominent company taking a step forward and refusing to support such legacy software. I sincerely hope no one listening to our show still uses IE6 because you are severely opening yourself up to security risks as well as limiting your ability to view sites the way they were designed. To help force you to upgrade, Google has decided to prevent you from using their services. "Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products -- as well as new Docs and Sites features -- won’t work properly in older browsers." Eventually you will not be able to access your gmail account from IE6 as well. In their blog post they also list and link to supported browsers including Chrome. I believe this is a good move for the internet community as a whole. There is no reason we should support versions older than a year old when the software in question is free. It literally costs you no money and 9 times out of 10 makes your browsing experience better. |
